Fears in our minds

To whom it may concern,

I feel like before I tell you about my art, you should probably know about me as a person. I am a quiet, friendly girl who sits in the front row of every class. If I don’t, I will be distracted by something in the window or by the figures I see in the dotted ceiling tiles. I am constantly studying in coffee shops, falling asleep watching Law and Order SVU, spending time with my family, or waitressing at the lovely Shannondell.

My two escapes are reading and art. Since you are here for an art show, I’m assuming you’d prefer to learn about my art. I started with art the regular way a child does, simple stick figures, and suns with sunglasses in the corner of my page. Slowly, I shifted to doodle sessions during the summers I spent in the Poconos. I woke up early and sat on the porch with my grandfather while he drank coffee. I would draw trees, leaves, the lake, and pretty much any still life possible.

I transferred to Methacton during my freshman year. I was a shy girl with no friends. It was hard to find a place I felt comfortable when most people already had their friend groups. I quickly found a home for myself in the art department. I joined the National Art Honors Society and continued with art all four years of my high school career.

I met some of my best friends in art class. Spending class laughing and joking with them, these past four years has been amazing.

I also want to acknowledge the amazing teachers in our department who have kept me sane and taught me great work ethics and time management.

The art rooms are my home away from home. I am so happy to be in AP Studio Art this year.

I am going to the University of Pittsburgh for the year 2020-2021 to major in civil engineering. With civil engineering, I will work closely with architects. Having a creative mind and staying active with art will help me bring to life the designs of architects.

                                                                                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                         Amanda Burkholder
